⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "I highly recommend you make a visit and see for yourself...." — Paula Maida. I’ve had mild off-and-on lower back pain for about 20 years. Recently I couldn’t stand up straight and a friend recommended Dr. Shawn. His adjustments are awesome and I will definitely continue my visits. He explains what he is doing and why and uses visuals. I highly recommend you make a visit and see for yourself.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️"He will help you set the foundation...." — Evan Rosenfield. If you are experiencing discomfort you need Dr Carlin. He has eliminated my nerve pain and continues to help my overall discomfort. He will help you set the foundation for the start of your health and wellness. Then he can support you on your way to even better health. You will get a lot more out of your visits than only the adjustment(which is great). Highly recommended! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "I have been a patient with Evolution for almost 2 years..." — Tanisha Sherman. I have been a patient with Evolution for almost 2 years and have seen very good results. Dr. Shawn listens to your issues and works hard to address what ails you. I highly recommend this practice. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "Within days of the first adjustment I could stand..." — Paul Steinmetz. Shawn explained how he works at the first appointment and how his methods of chiropractic would address my pain. Within days of the first adjustment I could stand and sit longer without aching legs and back. the sessions are quick and thorough. I've recommended him to several friends. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "I saw improvement in my situation after only the first visit..." — Sherri Hill. I was raised in a family that disparaged chiropractic treatment, so I was reluctant to go at first. I had been complaining about shoulder and arm pain, and my boss wanted me to meet Dr. Shawn and see what a treatment looks like, so I went. I was impressed by Dr. Shawn's friendly and welcoming professional demeanor and how non-doctor's-office-like his practice felt. It is very relaxed, non-stressful and more like a wellness center. I decided to let Dr. Shawn try to treat my issues. He thoroughly explained everything involved and what I should expect during and after treatment. He even called me the day after my first treatment to see how I was feeling. I now look forward to my twice-weekly appointments with Dr. Shawn and can honestly say I saw improvement in my situation after only the first visit -- and the improvement continues. If you are hesitant about chiropractic care like I was, I highly suggest you meet Dr. Shawn, express your concerns, and let him explain to you what he does and why it works. You won't be disappointed, and you'll be feeling better before you know it! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "I highly recommend him to anyone..." — Kate Fitzpatrick. Dr. Shawn has been treating me and my two young daughters, ages two and five, every few weeks for several months now and we are very happy with his care. He has also been treating my four-month-old son since he was in the womb and my postpartum transition has been very smooth. Dr. Shawn is kind, gentle, empathetic and a good listener, and we all feel better when we leave his office! I highly recommend him to anyone in our area who is interested in learning more about chiropractic care and how it can greatly improve your quality of life. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "I absolutely recommend him!..." — Marion Lynott. I saw Dr. Carlin when I had a shoulder pain, (following a skiing incident), that just wouldn't go away. He used his "magic" on me with his special tools, and I was grateful that he didn't use the the popping and cracking technique. I was a little doubtful at first because his technique is so soft and gentle, and wondered how it would work. BUT after about three visits my pain went away and it hasn't bothered me since. Very impressed and I absolutely recommend him! |

Danbury’s Back Pain Specialist
The upper back is known to us chiropractors as the thoracic region, and the neck is the cervical region. Back pain is the well-known cause of disability worldwide. And that’s no wonder. We might take it for granted, but our spines are quite complex and fascinating. Padded by shock-absorbing intervertebral discs and connected by ligaments and tendons, it’s suiting to call our spines a mechanism. Starting at the very bottom of the spine, there is the sacral & coccygeal (tailbone) segment. The “lower back,” as most of us know it consists of vertebrae a bit further up the spine. Supporting most of the upper body, this is also called the lumbar region.
Treating back pain in each region of the back requires different techniques and long-term approaches. Common muscular issues in the thoracic region- like that awful knot in your back after working at a computer all day- are treated far differently than a traumatic injury. Dr. Carlin is unique in that he approaches each patient with no preconceptions and no assumptions- allowing him to tailor a treatment plan no matter how severe back pain is or how long a patient has been dealing with back pain. Dr. Carlin also utilizes the most up to date technology in order to give all of his patients the same level of care just like they do for professional athletes and Olympians.
Common Causes of Back Pain: Everyone experiences back pain at some point, but over time chiropractors have seen several trends. These are just some of the typical causes of back pain:

Common Causes of Back Pain: Everyone experiences back pain at some point, but over time chiropractors have seen several trends. These are just some of the typical causes of back pain:
- Age – When most people celebrate being 30 or 40 years old, back pain becomes more common. Of course, some of this is because of natural wear and tear. Back pain also begins at this age because of the snowballing effects of bad habits that people develop throughout their lives.
- Muscle / Ligament Strain – The weekend warrior who goes out and lifts heavy wights once a week has most likely experienced some of these. Lifting heavy objects or even making a sudden movement can strain your back muscles or ligaments. This causes that terrible “locked up” feeling of a muscle spasm.
- Arthritis / Osteoporosis – The spine has lots of moving parts that can develop arthritis just like the other joints in the body. Osteoporosis in the spine can cause someone to develop painful bone fractures due to the symptoms of osteoporosis causing bones to become structurally weaker.
- Ruptures / Bulging Discs – Discs act as practical shock absorbers for your back. With too much stress, a disk can bulge or even rupture. That can put pressure on the nerves in the back, causing extreme pain. On the other hand, a bulging or ruptured disc might not press on a nerve. There may be no pain at all and someone could go about their daily life without even knowing that they have a ruptured or bulging disc in their back. In these cases, the affected disc is usually accidentally found in an X-ray that was looking for something else!
How to Prevent Back Pain
Look, everyone experiences back pain at one time or another in their lives. But let's not rain on your parade. If things get rough, Evolution Chiropractic of Danbury is here to help! But Dr. Carlin wants to help people lead a healthier, pain-free life, so here are a few tips on preventing back injury and pain:
- Stand Correctly – Just like your grade-school teacher said, DON’T SLOUCH! Keep your chin up, shoulders back, and maintain a neutral position with your pelvis. Good posture reduces stress on your muscles and, that's right, prevents undue strain on the back that will most likely lead to pain.
- Sit Correctly – In the work demands of the modern world, nearly everybody is sitting too much. Be sure to choose an office chair that swivels and has good lower back support. Sit up straight with your shoulders pulled back and down slightly, releasing tension in your shoulders and neck. Do your best to prevent craning your neck as well. Sitting correctly also means NOT sitting- get up every half hour and take a quick stretch. Your co-workers might think you’re a bit odd, but their backs will be hurting while yours will thank you.
- Maintain a Healthy Weight – But not at the cost of your health. Intermittent fasting is one of many potentially dangerous weight-loss fads making the rounds that’s not for everyone. Being overweight certainly strains the back muscles and can cause back pain- but losing weight in a healthy way through eating properly and exercising frequently is the only one-size-fits-all solution.
- Build Muscle – But don’t start heavy squats next week. Simple abdominal exercises and light-weight back exercises help build the muscles in your core. Nearly everyone has an imbalance between their abdominal muscles and their back muscles, focusing on abdominal exercise can help take some of the load off the back muscles, preventing strain and injury. The goal is to build the muscles that assist the back and strengthen the back as well. There is no need for any heavy lifting!
- Aerobic Exercise – But don’t go pounding the pavement non-stop. If you need to run, try to find a track with a more forgiving surface than pavement, or find a nice field to run laps around. Swimming is an excellent way to increase the strength and endurance of your back muscles. Swimming and walking are probably the best exercises to keep your back healthy. Remember to keep it low-impact or even better, keep it no-impact.
- Stop Smoking – Yes, you read that right. Smoking has been shown to restrict blood flow to the discs between vertebrae, resulting in quicker disc degeneration than non-smokers. Quit for your lungs AND your back!
